The Galton Laboratory was founded in UCL as early as 1904,as a centre for research in human genetics and became part of the Department of Biology in UCL in 1996. The central research theme in this MRC Unit was the investigation of genetically determined characteristics and their significance in human health and disease - the occurrence of person to person variation, the relationship between structure and function, the mapping of human genes to chromosomes, the occurrence of multiple genes and multi-gene families and the factors which regulate their patterns of gene expression. The work depended on a wide range of molecular and genetical methods, ranging from morphological analysis of the phenotype to protein and DNA isolation and identification to somatic cell genetics, molecular cytogenetics
